10 QUESTIONZ W/EVRYDAY TONY

Evryday Tony  is a versatile rapper from Dallas Texas. Steppin' on the scene with Erotic D - a Dallas, Texas producer/rapper known for his work with Dr. Dre, The D.O.C., and the late MC Breed - Tony began to shine and make a name for himself with local fans. In 2019, he won the Master of the Mic  Challenge.

Originally from South Jersey, Tony and I go way back like babies on pacifiers. We grew up together, and making music was always our dream. For a short while, we had our own little group. 20 years later, we finally released a song together, "End Of An Era", which is now being nominated for Single Of The Year in the International Singer-Songwriter Association Awards. He is my childhood friend and one of my favorite rappers and these are my 10 Questionz with Evryday Tony.

1. How’d you get the name Evryday Tony?

Working every day. Doing overtime. Not taking any days off. A friend and coworker said it jokingly but it stuck. Over the years, I try to live up to the name when it came to consistency and productivity. I apply the same mindset I had working at the warehouse to music and business and EvryDay life. EvryDay Tony is not gonna stop. Whatever I'm focused on, it's a relentless hustle attached to it. No days off.

2. Describe your rapping style. Who do you feel like you sound like?

It's hard to say. It depends on my cadence at the time. I've heard Nas when I'm getting deep. I've heard Jay or Cam when I rhyme cocky. I've heard J Cole when I go introspective. Do I try to sound like anyone? Nah but I try to match the vibe of the beat. Vibe is important. I'm still learning how to incorporate that into my writing. It used to be all about the lyrics. Now I'll sacrifice lyrics for a nice flow that'll provide a certain vibe.

3. Of all of your songs that are out now, which is your favorite? What inspired the lyrics?

3 Stimmys Deep is my latest release and I love it because it's true and I hope it creates a dialogue. I hope it’s controversial enough to add traction. Not my reason behind writing it but now that it's out, I hope it goes that way. This is not for people that work hard and are responsible that need a lil help during these hard pandemic times. This is really to my loved ones that don't apply themselves and get that stimmy and "bailout" with it. It's for them. That’s why I say King fix your crown

.

4. Are you hoping to eventually get signed or do you plan on staying an Independent artist? Why?

I'll stay independent. Everyone I work with has ownership. They own their thing. It's a hard road but if you pop, all the money is yours. All the control is yours. All the masters, residuals, publishing, etc. I'd partner for a short time maybe to get distribution and marketing but we'd have to come to an agreement where I’m comfortable. Also, labels don't want you until you're hot and already the man in your city making money with a solid name. Why would I need a label if I get myself to that point? Another thing, these labels Exec/A&R don't know talent. Think of the ones that didn't see the star potential in Nas, Jay, Eminem, etc.  They were all turned away at some point. Kanye had Jesus Walks and they told him no. I don't really have respect for the opinion of a label person. Fuck do they know?

5. How long have you been doing music?

Privately since I was 8-writing and learning the craft. Publicly since 2018. And I'm still feeling like a new artist. Learning this new way of dropping content and understanding there's so much that goes into breaking into this industry.

6. What challenges do you face as an independent artist? How have you overcome some of them?

Having a day job. If I did music full time, I'd like to think I'd be on already-“household name status.”  Also, another challenge is knowing who is for you and who isn't. I got brothers that'll kill and die for me. Then I got so-called brothers that keep a side-eye on me. I just got chills. And then beefs. We still outside, we're one bad decision away from jail, death, or irrelevance. I try to put as much-if not more-hours into my craft as my job. I'm shocked to have the small status I have at this point. I try to keep my bros close to me and out of trouble and keep the fake niggas at a distance.  I try to stay level-headed myself.

7. What has changed for you this year compared to last year?

The year is still new but I do feel like my dick bigger than everybody else's. Let me add context to that. An OG told me to walk into every room like I got the biggest dick. Stop being so humble. Drop ya nuts. This year I'm feeling that way. I don't see too many who can fuck with me on this rap shit.

8. What goal do you hope to accomplish before this year is over?

I'd hope to drop a few albums, do a few shows, get into a few blogs and newspapers, get nods and win artist of the year, get offered a deal only to leverage it into a power position of higher indie status. I hope everybody I work with shines with me. I hope my clothing is in everybody's closet. I want to throw some money in stocks. I want my current business ventures to succeed. I hope all this work I'm doing on myself, such as audiobooks and research on best practices pays off for me.

9. Do you have any new music coming out? If so, when?

I have an album almost ready. A few more songs then, I'm dropping it. I want to add visuals and do a whole campaign. Really push it. The working title is Hero of the hood. It may change.

10. Is Evryday Tony the artist any different from Tony the man?

In some ways, yes and also no. I talk about myself in the music. I hardly talk about myself outside of that. I'm humble in real life. My bars are in your face boastful and overbearing. But I'm similar in the way I want to help my people. I do that in real life. Whether it's giving money, lending my time and talents, or expertise. Like, I'm going to start a private driving school where I teach young brothers and felons fresh out how to drive trucks. Big rig companies hire felons. That's in the works. Whatever I'm doing I'm gonna teach others to do it.
