10 QUESTIONZ W/GERAN

Hey guys,

We’re back with another "10 QUESTIONZ W/" article.

Allow me to introduce you to Geran.  An Australian rapper from Brisbane City, Queensland. I cyber-ly met him a few years ago on Instagram and dug his style.  I was especially drawn in when I heard him spitting over one of my favorite Piano Dubstep instrumentals. I was like, “Who is this dude! And why the hell am I missing out on Australian music!!!?” But thanks to him I got introduced to a lot more Australian artists and am now hip to the music culture over there.

I got the chance to work with Geran on a very personal song called “Dear Dianna” which he talks about here

Geran worked with a promotions & indie ticketing company called Raptix where he got connected with artists like Crazy Town, & Merkules. Since 2018, He worked closely with Trigz (Aka Daniel Raymxnd) and DJ Vills, touring Sydney, Melbourne, the Gold Coast, and many other places.

His latest project is Good Year. a featured song on the M.A.T. E.S EP.

"It's an effort to connect Australia and U.S and experiment with new sounds and expand the scene."-Geran

Here are 10 Questionz with Geran:

1. When did you know you wanted to be a rapper and what/who inspired you?

I remember being in class in year 4 at school and the teacher rolled in one of those TVs on the stands that we used to have and put on the Bliss N EsoOut of Africa” documentary. I just remember thinking it was so cool that they used their music to really help people. Idk if that’s the moment I decided to be a rapper but definitely looking back it's one of the reasons I was inspired to start, bullet and a target is still one of my favorite tracks of all time.

2. I’ve never heard of any rappers from Australia so I was super excited to work with you on Dear Dianna, but it made me wonder what the music scene was like out there. What are the top music Genres in Brisbane and where do you fit in? (Meaning is there a market out there for your style of music?)

Dope artists/ groups like Bliss n Eso have really paved the way in Australia as far as hip hop goes. I wouldn’t say it’s as big as America's scene but there’s definitely a lot going on down here. As far as top genres go, rock is pretty big in Australia and the general pop music but Hip Hop has grown pretty popular over the last 10-15 years.

3. What was it like for you the first time you performed in front of a live audience?

Scary. Haha. The first time I performed, Trigz put me on as a support for one of his gigs. I roped in absolutely all of the friends and family that I could to come out. With them combined with the crowd that was out there, It ended up being close to 50 people crammed into this tiny little back room at a bar. I was kind of awkward lol but still heaps of fun.

4. Do you plan on staying an Independent artist or are you hoping to eventually get signed?

Tough call! Hey, I’ve always wanted to be independent, I’ve got dreams of having my own studio/ label one day. If Golden Era is reading this, I'd be pretty keen to sign though ;).

5. Do you have any new music coming out soon? If so, tell us about it.

I’m featured on one of the Daniel Raymxnd (better known as Trigz),  M.A.T.E.S”  EP song called Good Year!  Basically, he’s made a mixtape of banger beats and connected some local Australian artists with some U.S artists on a 6 track E.P. Good Year is probably my favorite track that I’ve worked on, to be honest. It’s about how 2020 was pretty rough for a lot of people but I also became a godfather and a dad, and there were a lot of good things to come from it as well. Divine from Perth killed his verse and Rob Shaker whipped up some awesome cuts for the hook. It’s been a pretty awesome opportunity to work with some bigger heads than myself in the industry.

6. The song Dear Dianna is a real letter to a real friend who got caught up in a murder case, would you mind sharing with us a bit of the story and what’s happening with Dianna now?

In the end, she had to cop a guilty plea of being an accessory after the fact. The lawyers sort of pushed her into it… Idk. It’s a lot better than being charged with murder but we weren’t really happy with how things went down. She was sentenced to 4 years including time served so she should be getting out late next year.

7. I had to stop music for over 10 years because I became a mother and didn’t really have a way to do both. There was a time I thought I’d never go back to music. I know you just had a baby girl this past December (CONGRATULATIONS!!!) has it affected your music career in any way? If so, please explain.

Thanks a bunch! She's my world haha as I’m sure you understand being a mum yourself. Her coming into the world has affected my music career in a big way. On one hand, it takes up a lot of time being a dad, so there’s definitely that element of stress when it comes to getting things done. On the other hand, she’s brought so much color into my world. I think I’ve matured as a person and having her around has made me even more motivated to build a successful career. I think I’ve written my best music either about her or since she was born.

8. Name 3 artists you’d love to collab with and why?

Eso from Bliss N Eso, Eminem, and Dizzy Wright. Eso because I grew up listening to him, and he’s made some of my favorite music, Eminem because he’s an absolute Don, and Dizzy because I’d love to write a track with some real, meaningful lyrics with him similar to Kill ‘em With Kindness

9. What has been your biggest challenge as an independent artist and what has been your greatest accomplishment.

My biggest challenge has been my mental health. I’m constantly criticizing myself while trying to improve and it can get to be a lot. Trying to build and grow without stressing out too much and putting myself down is still a real struggle for me sometimes. It's hard to pick "a biggest" accomplishment, I’ve done so many things that I’m proud of over the years (not bragging I swear haha). If I had to pick it’d be between supporting Merkules and Complete in 2019, and supporting Crazy Town in early 2020. I’m pretty proud of the work I’ve done with Musical Circles giving Hip Hop workshops at local schools too though. That’s definitely something I wanna do more of.

10. What advice would you give someone who wanted to pursue music?

Believe in yourself! If you’ve got the heart and the passion for it, keep working on your sound and your dreams are something you can achieve! Be critical but don’t put yourself down, and always remember that music is supposed to be fun too.
