Steve and Annie are making waves with their original songs, weaving together rootsy poetry and fiery harmonies that resonate across genres and borders. Since 2020, they’ve released a steady stream of music that’s earned them radio play from Seattle to Dublin, captivating audiences with their raw, authentic sound. Their live performances, fueled by smokin’ guitars, rock-solid rhythms, and dynamic vocal harmonies, have solidified their reputation as a must-see act in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
Steve, a staple of the Seattle music scene, has left his mark with bands like the Rangehoods, No Cheese Please, The Fighting Cocks, and Denny Blaine. His musical journey includes two acclaimed EPs recorded with San Francisco’s Yanks—Only Lovers Left Alive and Made In The States—both released on the DTI label.
In 2021, Steve and Annie officially joined forces, forming a powerhouse band that showcases their shared vision. They enlisted guitarist Bart Hyde, drummer Perry Morgan, and pedal steel guitarist Mark Wuesthoff. Together, this group of veteran musicians has created a distinctive sound that’s as compelling as their live performances.
Sharkeologist was born from the restless energy of Jeff Grant, a singer, guitarist, and songwriter who spent his 20s playing in hard rock and indie-pop bands across Seattle. Chasing stability, he made the choice to “grow up” and pursue a career in psychotherapy, earning an MA and PhD in Psychology. He built a life—marriage, kids, a profession—but something was missing. In 2021, the pull of music became undeniable, and he set out to home-record a set of songs that would become The Last Gasp, Sharkeologist’s debut album.
Needing someone to mix and master the record, Jeff stumbled upon Jesse Mazur (@mazurethstudios) through a random Google search. What started as a professional collaboration quickly became a creative partnership, leading Jesse to join the band—first on drums, now on guitar. As the project grew, so did the lineup. Sharkeologist now consists of Jeff Grant (vocals/guitar), Jesse Mazur (guitar), Aaron Stayman (guitar), Joel Hoyer (bass), Shawn Schlogel (keys), and Rick Weber (drums).
At a recent show, someone described Sharkeologist as “Sexy Weezer,” a label the band fully embraces. Their sound blends the guitar-driven riffs and hooks of Weezer with the sultry, heavy synth grooves of Nine Inch Nails. There’s an edge, an energy, and a sense of unpredictability that makes their music both addictive and dynamic. Their influences—ranging from Queens of the Stone Age to The Cars—shape a style that demands movement, whether it’s banging your head, stomping your feet, or shaking your ass.
Since their first live performance in March 2024, Sharkeologist has built a reputation for high-energy, electrifying shows that never play out the same way twice. Their goal is simple: to be one of the best live bands in the Pacific Northwest. Every performance teeters on the edge, full of raw power and unexpected moments. But beneath the chaos is craft—catchy melodies that take sharp turns, chord progressions that defy expectation, and a depth that rewards listeners who pay close attention. It’s music meant to surprise, excite, and keep you coming back for more.
The band members hail from different corners of Washington—Seattle, Fall City, Bothell, Bainbridge—and bring a wealth of experience from other projects. Jeff has played in Johnny Nails, The Shakedown, Gon Zovi, The Heebie Jeebies, Birdvana, and The Opener. Jesse has been in Anthrocene and previously toured with Red As Recovery. Shawn is a fixture in The Shakedown, Gon Zovi, Side One, and countless jazz ensembles. Joel has played with The Shakedown, Old Coast, Charles Wicklander Band, Birdvana, The Opener, and Hoyer Brothers. Aaron has played with John Pinetree and as a solo acoustic artist.
With undeniable chemistry, a fierce dedication to their craft, and a sound that balances nostalgia with a fresh edge, Sharkeologist is poised to become a force in the Seattle music scene and beyond.
I had the privilege of catching one of Sharkeologist’s shows early on, and from the moment they hit the stage, I knew I was witnessing something special—something that would be remembered. It felt like luck to have engaged with them at this stage in their journey because Sharky G (as I’m calling them) are a rare breed.
Coming from NJ/NY, I’m used to a certain kind of energy—bold, unfiltered, a little chaotic in the best way. Sharkeologist brought that same intensity but with a distinct Seattle twist. They’re edgy, undeniably sexy, and somehow both familiar and refreshingly original. Their sound doesn’t just demand attention; it seduces you into movement, pulling you into their world.
Mark my words—Sharky G is about to be the next greatest thing to come out of Seattle.
